In 1980, Ruth
and Bob Holliday spent their honeymoon touring on bicycles from Wichita to
California. They founded Bicycle Pedaler two years later to share their passion
for bicycles with the greater Wichita community. For over 15 years,
they served as support mechanics for Bike Across Kansas. They are proud
supporters of the bicycling community of Wichita, donating both time and money
to promote health through cycling! They are both retired RN's.
stocked the original models of the Specialized Stumpjumper (1981) and
Cannondale Touring (1983) bikes, brands that are still carried in the shop to
this day. Bicycle Pedaler staff has a combine bike shop experience of over 130 years and we are dedicated to sharing that knowledge with you. Zack Abercrombie who has been with us for over 20 years is our manager and Aaron North, 9 years, our service manager.
Why the Hippos?
represent that anybody can ride, no matter what size or shape you are. The
tandem represents that bicycling is a family activity that everyone can enjoy!
Did you know?
first Race Across America, originally called The Great American Bike Race in
1981, Lon Haldeman’s crew, called us on a Sunday morning wondering if we could
help. He was having problems with his
feet swelling and the only shoes he could get into were his penny loafers. We were able to loan him a pair of large
(size 13) bicycling shoes which he used to win the race! Lon Haldeman is a 6 time winner of what is
known as “The World’s Toughest Bicycle Race” (3 solo and 3 on a tandem) and
founder of PAC tours with his wife Susan Notorangelo, who is also a 3 time
winner (2 solo and 1 on a tandem!).
The route for RAAM, Race Across America, still graces Sedgwick County every June with dozens of riders and teams coming through our area!
